Spirit, discipline, and friendship

The Shinzen Dojo Berlin visiting Shihan Shigeo Niitsu in Tokyo

Tokyo. On the evening of May 9, 2025, the German delegation of the IKO World Zen-Kyokushin Europe – consisting of Senpai Anh Son Le (Shinzen Dojo Berlin), Senpai Paul Kniep (Hombu Dojo Leipzig) and Yusuf El-Madani (Shinzen Dojo Berlin) – had the special honour of visiting the renowned dojo of Shihan Shigeo Niitsu (6th Dan) in Tokyo-Hachioji for the second time.

An invitation with meaning

A sign of deep connection

The invitation to Tokyo was no coincidence, but an expression of grown trust. Shihan Niitsu, who is known for his clear line, strong presence, and deep roots in traditional Kyokushin Budo is known for his clear line, strong presence, and deep roots in traditional

“Karate is not just technique. It is attitude, spirit, and mutual respect – regardless of which country one comes from.”– Shihan Shigeo Niitsu

Der Besuch war daher weit mehr als ein Training. Er war Ausdruck gelebter Philosophy, internationaler Freundschaft und einer gemeinsamen Mission: to carry Kyokushin authentically and powerfully into the next generation.

Training in Hachioji: Sweat, technique, and fighting spirit

Structure of the session: From basics to tournament Kumite

The 90-minute session began punctually at 19:15 and followed a clear structure:

  • Kihon (基本): Precise basic techniques with a focus on breathing, hip movement and posture.
  • Kata (型): Analysis and application of selected forms.
  • Pad training: Focus on explosiveness, timing and accuracy.
  • Kumite (組手): Free sparring with special emphasis on timing, distance and control.
  • Tournament Kumite: Hard sparring rounds for competitive-level fighters – no compromises, just honest fighting.

"A strong body protects nothing without a strong mind."– Shihan Shigeo Niitsu

The German delegation was deeply impressed by the discipline and precision of the Japanese students as well as the unwavering Budo spirit that was palpable in the Hachioji Dojo.

Meeting as equals

Learning together – growing together

The evening was not just a training session, but a valuable exchange between cultures. Senpai Son Le, leader of the Shinzen Dojo Berlin, emphasised after training:

"Such encounters remind us why we walk this path: not because of the belt colour, but because of the people and values that connect us."

Also Yusuf El-Madani, a passionate fan of Japan and a student of Senpai Son, was visibly moved by the opportunity to train with the Japanese team and to connect directly with the roots of Kyokushin Karate .

A heartfelt conclusion

Eating together as a sign of respect

Following the training, Shihan Niitsu invited the delegation to a shared dinner 🍱 – a small but meaningful gesture deeply rooted in Japan.

"Whoever trains together should also laugh and eat together. This is the only way trust grows."– Shihan Shigeo Niitsu

The meal provided a space for conversations about training methods, dojo culture in Europe and Japan, and future cooperation.

Gratitude and outlook

A promise to carry the fire forward

The Shinzen Dojo Berlin expresses its heartfelt thanks to Shihan Niitsu and his team for the open welcome, the demanding training and the honest hospitality.

The visit to Tokyo was more than a trip – it was a step back to the roots and simultaneously a step forward on the path of a true Kyokushin Karateka.
