New to Berlin? Meeting people through sports
A fixed group and recurring appointments can make starting in a new city easier.
You can come to the first training alone. Recurring encounters have a simple advantage: You do not have to look for a new event or start a new conversation every time. Shared tasks provide a framework for getting to know people.
Compare options honestly
This overview is intended for guidance. The Shinzen Dojo itself offers Kyokushin Karate.
| Group form | How encounters arise | What you can check beforehand |
|---|---|---|
| Running or leisure group | Via shared routes and regular meetings. | Beginner pace and fixed meeting points. |
| Team sports | Via training, agreements, and joint games. | Entry without an existing team. |
| Dance class | Via recurring movement tasks. | Partner rules and course level. |
| Martial arts dojo | Via guided exercises and partner rotation. | Dealing with newcomers and contact rules. |
Consistency is more helpful than a single event
In a fixed training group, you see people again. You can learn the names first, ask questions about exercises and, after a few sessions, decide how much interaction you want. A membership does not guarantee friendships; the group must be a good human fit for you.
How to attend the first class alone
Sign up beforehand and say that you are new. Ask when you should be there and who will welcome you. For the initial conversations, a question about the procedure is enough. No one has to fulfill a specific social role to be allowed to try out a sport.
Group training at SDB
The Shinzen Dojo is a Kyokushin Karate group with personal instruction. Adult training takes place in Berlin-Schöneberg on Mondays and Thursdays from 20:30 to 21:45. Partner exercises are part of the lessons. You can address language and individual questions about joining in your inquiry.
The appropriate expectation
Come with the goal of getting to know the training format and the group. Whether regular training and new contacts arise from this will show over time. If you are primarily looking for changing leisure events, an open leisure group may be a better fit.

Do I have to bring a training partner?
