Which sport suits my child?

Children's sports in Berlin from age 5: Find a group that fits your child's age, temperament and your family's daily routine.

Your child does not need to have a favourite sport yet. A good first sports group teaches the joy of movement, explains tasks understandably and leaves time to settle in. What is decisive is how your child experiences the lesson — not which sport is currently popular.

Compare options honestly

This overview is intended for guidance. The Shinzen Dojo itself offers Kyokushin Karate.

Sport typeWhat your child can try outWhat to look for in a trial lesson
GymnasticsBalancing, jumping and diverse movement on equipment. Are tasks age-appropriate and waiting times manageable?
SwimmingSafety and movement in the water. How large is the group and what prior experience is expected?
Team sportsPlaying together, rules and cooperation.Does every child get a turn and how does the group deal with mistakes?
DanceRhythm, expression and movement sequences.Do the music, teaching style and group pace suit the child?
KarateCoordination, basic techniques, fixed routines and partner exercises. Are rules, distance and contact explained in a child-friendly way?

Temperament is a starting point, not a label

A reserved child can feel comfortable in a clearly structured group. A child with lots of energy needs tasks and equally understandable boundaries. Observe whether the instructor includes different children without exposing or comparing them.

Evaluating the first trial lesson together

Ask: What did you enjoy? Did you know what you were supposed to do? Did anyone help you? Would you like to go again? A quiet first lesson is not a failure. The answer might also be to try a different sport.

What SDB actually offers

At Shinzen Dojo, children and teenagers train on Saturdays in Berlin-Steglitz, Gardeschützenweg 57. There are groups for 5–8 years, 9–13 years and teenagers. The offer is Kyokushin Karate; gymnastics, swimming and dance are comparison options here, not SDB courses.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child have to be athletic already?

Prior experience is not required when starting karate. Discuss special needs with the instructor in advance.

Do you offer courses for children under five?

The SDB children's groups described here start from age five. For younger children, a suitable alternative movement group should be sought.
