Challenges and fighting spirit: The last Kyu grading of 2024 at Shinzen Dojo Berlin
On 22 December 2024 took place at Shinzen Dojo Berlin the last Kyu grading des Jahres statt. Es war ein intensiver und inspirierender Tag, der die Essenz des Kyokushin Karate – Mut, Durchhaltevermögen und Kampfgeist – eindrucksvoll zeigte.
A day full of energy and discipline
With around 30 participants, ranging from children to teenagers and adults, the grading was a reflection of the diversity and community spirit in the dojo. Senpai Anh Son Le, who led the examination, opened the event with a motivational speech. In it, he explained the meaning of Osu no Seishin (押忍の精神) – the indomitable spirit – and encouraged them to demonstrate this during the examination.

“Technical execution is not the only thing that is important. I want to see the will! Not to give up, to carry on!” – Senpai Son
The examination procedure: From fundamentals to fighting spirit
Warm-up – The first test for future black belts

The examination began with an energetic warm-up, led by Yusuf, Mazen and Abdul – three dedicated students already preparing for their future black belt examinations. They demonstrated what is expected of a Kyokushin Karateka: discipline, precision, and leadership.
Kihon, Kata, and physical strain
The examinees were divided into groups to ensure age- and performance-appropriate examinations.
- Beginners (10th and 9th Kyu) were tested on their fundamentals (Kihon, 基本), including precise techniques such as Oi-Zuki (straight punch) and Mae-Geri , (front kick).
- More advanced students demonstrated their skills in Kata (Kata), the traditional forms that combine rhythm, precision, and inner focus.

Each technical examination was followed by intensive physical tests. From press-ups, Sit-ups and knee jumps to handstand exercises and Kiba-Dachi (騎馬立ち, horse stance) the participants' endurance was put to the test.
„Ein wahrer Karateka gibt niemals auf, selbst wenn der Körper streikt.“ – Mas Oyama
Pain and pride: The path of Kyokushin
Many participants struggled with muscle cramps, blisters on their feet, and waning strength, yet no one gave up. The children, in particular, showed impressive fighting spirit (Kakutō Seishin, 格闘精神) (Kakutō Seishin). They even reminded their fellow competitors to see the tests through together – a true sign of Kyokushin (極真), the “ultimate truth”.

The highlight: Kumite (組手)
To conclude the examination, the intensive Kumite rounds (free sparring) were up next. This showed who, in addition to technique and endurance, also had the courage to face pain in battle. Tears were shed – from pain, but also from joy as the final strikes and kicks were executed and the examination came to an end.

Verdiente Achievements und neue Ziele
After the tough examinations, Senpai Son presented the certificates to the proud examinees. All participants passed and have truly earned their new Kyu rank

For many, a new goal is now in focus: Preparing for the black belt examination (Shodan, 初段). This milestone examination requires years of dedication and preparation, but as Senpai Son said:
“Prepare yourselves, train hard, and you will achieve everything you set your minds to. The path of Kyokushin Karate never ends.”
Osu! The spirit of Shinzen Dojo Berlin lives on

The final Kyu examination of 2024 was not only a test of physical and technical abilities, but also a celebration of the tireless spirit of Osu – the dedication to never give up. With this spirit, the Shinzen Dojo Berlin looks confidently toward the coming year.

Osu and congratulations to all students!
